The Rots en Water Institute commissioned Crongl to modernize one of their student booklets. The goal was to refresh the current look while preserving the brand's visual identity and improving the appeal and functionality of the material. The booklet’s illustrations were done prior to the redesign, which left the layout, typography and overall design.

Student Book redesign for Rots en Water

Rots en Water is an established brand that develops training programs focused on building social and emotional skills in children and adolescents. This clearly defines the target audience, but also means there is limited flexibility when it comes to visual identity, as consistency is key to brand recognition.

To support this, the original Rots en Water color palette was preserved throughout the booklet design. Likewise, the pre-existing illustrations were retained, with only subtle digital upscaling applied for print.

Despite the limitations that come with preserving brand recognizability, several key elements were updated. Arial was chosen as the primary typeface for its clean, neutral look and strong legibility across different sizes. A clear text hierarchy and generous white space were also introduced to improve readability and allow for space to write inside of the book.

Much could be achieved by alterations as simple as aligning text to a baseline grid. Some other aspects of the layout, however, were more of a puzzle. By favoring white space and making liberal use of boxes to separate the elements, a cohesive reading experience soon emerged.

Alterations in the Design Process

The cover of the booklet, too, underwent a complete redesign to feature a student doing a staple physical exercise of the training course. It packs a punch and appeals to the targeted audience of young adolescents. It also clearly portrays the logo of Rots en Water in an effort to maximixe recognizability at a glance.
